Unless choosing a basic work truck trim, buyers now expect the same level of features and comfort found in any mainstream crossover. Compared to its rivals, one of the Silverado’s most glaring downfalls was its cabin. Though quiet and comfortable, it was starting to look frumpy and dated. It’s the little things that generate a positive first impression, and the new push-button ignition is a good start. New available 8-inch infotainment screens feature sharper graphics and quicker software, but they’re outshone by Ram’s new 12-inch Uconnect – an enormous interface resembling Audi’s premium Virtual Cockpit. The ZR2 may sound a little clunky across washboard roads, though it’s anything but – even at speeds cresting 80 km/h. In truth, at least audibly, it seems like it has more to do with the steering rack than the spectacular suspension setup, which at the very least deadens such surface impurities before they unsettle those in the cabin.
Back on paved roads, this off-roader rides like any other Silverado on the market, and that means it’s one of the smoothest half-tons on the market despite the lack of air suspension. Engine and Performance

Ford’s 3.0L turbo-diesel produces 250 hp and 440 lb-ft at 1,750, while the new Ram EcoDiesel belts out 260 hp and 480 lb-ft at 1,600. Max tow rating for the Chevy is 9,300 lb, slightly more than the Ram’s 9290 lb, but lagging far behind the diesel-powered Ford’s 11,500 lb.
Unlike the V6s offered by competitors Ford and Ram, the Chevy 3.0L is an inline-six, a configuration that’s inherently better balanced and therefore smoother and quieter. Aluminum block and heads contribute to lightweighting, and the engine boasts a number of high-tech measures, such as a variable-flow intake manifold and variable-geometry turbo, to increase power and efficiency.
It also has reduced complexity and friction compared to the V6, and Canadian drivers will appreciate its active thermal management, and faster-warming ceramic glow plugs. We spent a couple of hours in a Duramax diesel-equipped LT crew cab, in the high desert near Powell Butte, Oregon. Either way, the capability of this truck is unquestioned, with generous approach, departure, and breakover angles – 31.8, 23.3, and 23.4 degrees, respectively – plus the wildly game-changing one-pedal system, and all sorts of wheel travel make the Silverado 1500 ZR2 virtually unstoppable. While it’s a big vehicle, as all modern half-tons are, which limits the number of narrow trails it can traverse, the Silverado 1500 ZR2 is the kind of dynamo that impresses when the going gets rough. And yet it’s also just as competent and composed when all is well, bringing together the best of this truck before its update with a modern user interface and an impressive overall drivability.
