2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Redesign and Update Plan

Exterior and Interior

n the 2.4-mile track, the front-wheel-drive Cobalt SS SC was a hoot to drive, proving itself light and tossable with mild understeer, excellent brakes, and more than adequate power to tackle Mid-Ohio’s challenging corners and elevations. GM also had several modified Cobalts and Saturn Ion Redline coupes that share the same supercharged Ecotec on hand for comparison, including a couple featuring a Stage II engine package with larger injectors, a smaller supercharger pulley, and a recalibrated engine controller that ups horsepower and torque by about 10 percent. The Stage II upgrade, which will be offered for sale to the public in early 2006 through GM Performance Parts, is the standard engine package used on the Grand Am Cup Cobalts, which use otherwise untouched long-blocks.  2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Interior2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Interior

The $21,990 SS Supercharged features a 205hp 2.0L Ecotec with an Eaton M64 blower, 18-inch wheels and tires, closer-ratio steering, and a retuned sport suspension. The optional $1,500 Performance Package adds Recaro seats and a Quaife limited-slip differential. The SS Supercharged is aimed at buyers who might otherwise consider Dodge’s Neon SRT-4, a Subaru WRX, or an Acura RSX.

Engine and Performance

The front-mounted intercooler has a large and thick core, but the crinkled plastic intercooler piping can definitely be changed out along with a larger exhaust system. The only kinks we see with upping power is the engine’s direct injection system, which could make fuel upgrades quite difficult to source.2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Specs

GM engineers have not confirmed any factory staged upgrade packs in the works, but they do allude to the fact that some are in the pipeline. As much as we hassled them, there were no comments about the possibility of a GM-backed Cobalt SS turbo time attack car, which would be a welcome follow-up to the supercharged car that rocked everyone’s world back in 2026.

2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Fuel Economy

The Cobalt’s mojo comes courtesy of the aforementioned 2.0-liter-a 260-horsepower direct-injection turbo-and a heavily revised chassis, highlighted by stiffer springs and dampers, a larger rear anti-roll bar, 10-percent-quicker steering, Brembo four-piston front brakes, and 18-inch forged alloys wearing 225/40 Continentals. The package works, displaying predictable, confidence-inspiring traits at the track and, more important, grin-inducing grip (0.91 g). Making that grin even wider are a top speed of 160 mph and estimated combined fuel economy of 25 mpg.

2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Safety Features

The F35 five-speed isn’t as fluid or precise as others in the segment, namely the Civic Si’s. The electric power steering is linear but lacks the tactility of, say, a Mazdaspeed 3’s. The interior, with its hard plastic accoutrements, still screams econocar, despite new seats with UltraLux suedelike inserts. And there’s some torque steer, even with GM’s best trickery with electronics and suspension geometry.

2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Price and Release Date

Nevertheless, at only $22,995, the SS could stand for Super Steal. Even loaded with the $495 limited-slip differential (a must for the track), $750 sunroof, and $195 big wing, the SS still goes for under $25,000. Better yet, an SS sedan is coming for 2009. Either way, you’ll be grinning big as you pity those old Corvettes in the rearview.  2026 Chevy Cobalt SS Interior
