Exterior and Interior
The basic LT model is equipped with a plethora of equipment, such as heated seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, an eight-inch touchscreen, automatic high-beam control, automatic headlights, dual-zone temperature control, and 18-inch wheels. Unfortunately, due to a lack of microchips, my tester was missing that last functionality. Nevertheless, a monetary discount is available for both the current and future retrofitting phases, whenever the supply of chips increases.
As part of the LT Plus Package, you got a motorized tailgate, a built-in garage door opener, roof rails, blind-spot monitoring, mirrors that dimmed automatically, and sensors for parking in the back. When chips become available, the second of these functions can also be retrofitted. During this test, a V6 engine—worth $595—was installed in place of the LT’s standard four-cylinder engine.
If the V6 is what you’re after, you might want to check out the next step up, the True North. You can only get it with the six-cylinder engine, but it has all the bells and whistles of the LT Plus. The Blazer’s center stack seems tidy even though most of the functionality is still controlled via buttons and knobs. Because I am short, I sit high in the driver’s seat, yet the climate control controls are behind a dashboard lip, so it can be difficult to see them. But most of the controls for the temperature are on the little side. But the Camaro-style vents are great since you can easily regulate the temperature with them—just turn the bezels—even when wearing gloves. It is easy to get in and out of the car thanks to the wide-opening doors and low sill. Accessing the cargo compartment is made more challenging by the smaller hatch opening and higher liftover. Engine and Performance
For an extra$595, I could have the 3.6L V6 engine that comes standard on every other model level into my LT AWD. This car has the smooth power and low maintenance requirements of a non-turbo engine, so I’d choose to own it for a long time. There are 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque coming out of it. A silky-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission comes standard on both engines.
Even though the front wheels normally do most of the work in an AWD, they can switch to the back wheels to gain better grip if necessary. A more sophisticated technology, available on higher trim levels, may switch the power between the back wheels of the vehicle as needed. Whenever I encounter an area that is wet or slippery and would want more traction, I am more inclined to leave it on and allow the system to determine it. You have the option to switch between different modes, so you may choose to maximize fuel efficiency by leaving it in front-wheel drive. The Blazer with a 3.6-liter engine and all-wheel drive has been approved by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) for 12.6 liters per hundred kilometers in city driving, 9.2 liters per hundred kilometers on the highway, and 11.0 liters per hundred kilometers in mixed driving. Over the course of my week-long experiment, I managed an average of 12.9 liters per hundred kilometers. The four-cylinder engine gets 9.9 liters per hundred kilometers when driven with all-wheel drive. The Blazer’s fuel economy is average compared to other cars in its class, but it is far from exceptional.
